LunaVerse is an online virtual community made up of web sites based on a hypothetical lunar colony with multiple organizations, businesses, farmers, governments, anarcho-capitalist and libertarian enclaves, individual homesteads, etc.
Primarily, it's for fun. However, if it helps people learn about the issues involved in establishing a permant presence on the moon (and elsewhere) and gets people interested in doing just that, then so be it :)
The current idea is for the colony to grow organically with minimal constraints to impose some measure of consistency. For instance, geography and time. If two enclaves are close to one another, they should know about one another, and two installations shouldn't be in the same spot.
One idea is to have it set in the present, just in a slightly alternative universe where we stayed on the moon instead of losing interest, or where private space transportation was encouraged during the seventies, eighties, and beyond rather than stifled. Another is to set everything 50-100 years in the future. But we don't want to be stuck making predictions. This is supposed to be a hypothetical lunar society as it might be. But don't take our word for it.
Free web space, DNS, email, and subdomains (for now, of lunaverse.com only, but more will be added) for uses that are directly related to LunaVerse. Links and a search engine similar to Yahoo! or dmoz.org. Dynamic content that would be relevant to lunar residents. Web forums. Mailing lists. Possibly newsgroups and a chat service. Anything else the participants can think of!
For now, send email to Sean Lynch and let him know you're interested. Once we set up a mailing list, web forums, etc., it will be announced here.
LunaVerse is run entirely by volunteers. Whatever the volunteers want to do and are willing to support, we'll do. Whatever they're not interested in probably won't happen.
